The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.
"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
