Government Official Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Instructed to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.
An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in all vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.
He said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The broader defence environment underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in every areas of official activities, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
